| Things to do in Northern Arizona |
| The town of Williams, known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon ®,” is located only 60 miles south of the Grand Canyon where Interstate 40 intersects with Hwy 64. This is the only year-round route to the Canyon and makes Williams the perfect base for traveling to Grand Canyon and other attractions in Northern Arizona.
Williams is situated at an elevation of just over 6,700 feet and is surrounded by the Kaibab National Forest. Williams was the last town in America on historic Rt. 66 to be bypassed by an Interstate. It’s also home to the Grand Canyon Railway, a scenic train trip that departs daily from Williams to Grand Canyon.
Around Williams you’ll find several scenic fishing lakes, trails up Bill Williams Mountain, trails down Sycamore Canyon, an 18 hole golf course, and plenty of forest to roam in. Right outside the back door of the FireLight is a forested mountain with game trails to hike and the Santa Fe Reservoir, stocked with trout, is just two blocks to the west.
In the summer months there are daily gunfights in the streets of Williams and plenty of restaurants with live music nightly. Lots more info on local attractions and events can be found online or in person at the Williams Chamber of Commerce. Scheduled events can be found at www.williamsfestivals.com.
Attractions within a 30 to 60 minute drive include: Walnut Canyon National Monument, Sunset Crater National Monument, Wapatki National Monument, Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff, Oak Creek Canyon, and Sedona.
There are a number of tour companies in the northland; here are two that we can recommend:
Angel's Gate Tours. Angel's Gate Tours slogan is, "See Canyons, Not Crowds," and they live up to it. "Angel's Gate" tours are customized, informative, comfortable, affordable, and first class!
The Wildland Trekking Company. Raise the bar on your Grand Canyon vacation and venture below the rim! For year-round guided day hikes or multi-day hikes into the Grand Canyon, the Wildland Trekking Company comes highly recommended. They have over 20 years experience providing professional hiking tours to national parks throughout the Western US." |
